7 Things You Should Know About Sheer Day Curtains

You might be wondering why you need to have sheer day curtains in your home if you have nothing to hide and should feel free in your own house.

But have you had concerns about doing private things but need to take caution because your room does not have privacy from your neighbours?

Or that it’s a hassle and waste of electricity to switch on lights during the day because you only have night curtains at home?

Below we talk about the things you should know about sheer curtains so you know why you need or don’t need them.

1. What are privacy curtains called?

Curtains itself provides privacy to you. To be more specific, privacy curtains can be called day curtains or night curtains.

The sheer and thin privacy curtains are called day curtains. While the opaque and thick privacy curtains are called night curtains.

2. What’s the point of sheer curtains?

Sheer curtains are mainly used during the day to give you privacy at home or office.

But it also provides multiple benefits to your home such as:

  • Privacy: Sheer fabric makes it difficult for others to look into your home
  • Block harsh sunlight: It diffuses harsh morning or afternoon sun coming through your windows
  • Soothing home: It is a soft interior which adds calmness to your room

3. Can you see through sheer curtains from outside during the day?

You can’t see through sheer curtains clearly from outside during the day. We would say that the viable opacity is about 20%-30% through day curtains. Your neighbours would not be able to peep into your home from a distance.

4. Can people see through my curtains at night?

Yes for sheer day curtains, people can see through your curtains at night when lights are turned on. This is because of the lighting contrast from outside (dark) and inside (bright). You will not have this problem by layering day curtains with night curtains.

5. What is the difference between sheer and semi sheer curtains?

Sheer curtains can:

  • Offer you gentle natural sunlight
  • Privacy during the day
  • Elegant looking home
  • Not suitable as the only layer for bedrooms
  • Suitable as the only layer for living room, study room, or office

Semi sheer curtains are known as night curtains. It is up to 70% dimout.

For up to 70% dimout semi sheer curtains:

  • Offers you maximum privacy day & night
  • Dim your room slightly during the day
  • Allows environmental lights to enter room through fabric at night
  • Not very suitable as the only layer for bedrooms
  • Suitable as the only layer for living room, study room, or office

6. Should sheer curtains touch the floor?

Sheer curtains need not touch the floor since it does not bring additional benefit of blocking the lights out.

If installed as a single layer, we usually produce it half to 1-inch above the floor (hover style). You can choose to make it puddle style but it will also catch the dust & debris from your floor.

When layered with night curtains, we usually produce it shorter than night curtains (kiss style).

7. How do I choose sheer curtains?

Sheer curtains usually come with lace or linen fabric type. It depends on what style you are reaching for in your room. Linen fabric brings are heavier look while lace will look lighter.

We recommend lace style if you are layering with night curtains. Linen style for single layer.

Bonus: What type of curtain is not see through?

You may have caught it above. the curtain which is not see through will be semi-sheer or night curtains. Night curtains have a range of 60%-100% dimout to blackout functionality.

100% light blocking will be blackout curtains, while the rest below 100% dimout curtains. All night curtains are not see through.

For living rooms or study where you need some lighting but don’t want to have layering, we recommend up to 75% dimout curtains (semi-sheer).

For bedrooms or rooms which you want it to be dark especially for sleep or watching movies, we recommend up to 95% dimout curtains or even 100% blackout curtains.
